Le Grand Champ

Not a building, but central to the development of Ste Genevieve, Le Grand Champ or “The Big Field” consisted of long narrow strips of rich farmland, granted to individual owners.  The Big Field was enclosed by a single continuous fence, which was maintained by the community. “Old” Ste Genevieve was built between the Mississippi and this field; most adult males owned a residential lot in the village as well as a strip of farmable land.  After several devastating floods, the village gradually moved farther inland to its present location.

I like learning new things while viewing a person’s vacation pictures. What a great idea.
