Pierre Menard home

We left Ste. Genevieve, drove south along the river, crossed at Chester, IL, and found our way to the Pierre Menard house.  We arrived too  late for a tour, but enjoyed the building and its site, anyway.  This is the only surviving building of the original village of Kaskaskia, the rest was innundated when the Mississippi flooded and changed course.

Built in 1815 by Canadian fur trader, Pierre Menard, who became an Illinois founding father.

The ax marks still show on the hand hewn beams of the Menard home.

This little building at the edge of the property might have been a powder magazine.
